In 2017 I was on vacation with my family, and I was shopping. Suddenly I felt something strange with my vision. I had no pain, but it felt like a whispering – and my vision was a little blurry. I continued to take a few steps, and then I asked my husband to wait and take my hand. I said to him, “Something is wrong with my vision.” I continued walking to the parking garage. We went home, and I questioned myself about what was going on and inquired with family. The next day I went to Sam’s Club and asked women at the optical department if she could give me a referral. She was so nice to help me to call some doctors in the area. It was a long holiday weekend, and no one was working, so I went to the emergency room. She told me that she did not have the tools to help me. In the ER they performed verbal tests and asked me for my history. After that I had a CT scan. The doctor told me, “I have no good news. You had a stroke.” They kept me for 48 hours to run other tests. As a result of the stroke, I have significant vision loss. I can see half of an image. The middle section is blind. On my right side, my peripheral vision is lost. My condition hasn’t gotten worse I am told that it will stay the same. I am very sensitive to light and experience double vision. Since this occurred, I am feeling much better. For enjoyment I raise chickens for eggs, I cook for my family, although it takes a lot more time than it did before. In fact, everything takes a lot more time. I enjoy art at the Lighthouse. I like being creative, and I enjoy helping others with vision loss. Participating in art class at the Lighthouse helps me emotionally to continue dealing with my situation. Being with others at the Lighthouse who have experienced similar loss helps me to accept my condition. There is definitely a period of adaptation. I believe in God and I there are prayers for me from so many people.
